Chapter Ten

My stomach growled unattractively as we stumbled together through the door of Gram’s tri-level log cabin, and Jericho laughed against my lips.

“Eat,” he said, pulling away and dropping a kiss on my forehead. “I’m not going anywhere.”

I suppose I should have eaten something a little more substantial- something that would reinforce my newfound adulthood instead of making me look like an overgrown child- but that thought didn’t actually occur to me until I was on my third bite of cereal, and I caught Jericho watching me with amusement.

I swallowed, and smiled sheepishly. “I’m so un-glamorous, I know. Not exactly a dinner worthy of a vampire.”

“You think drinking blood is glamorous?” he asked, quirking one eyebrow. He was seated on the island across from me as I propped a hip against the kitchen counter. The way he leaned back against his hands, made his shirt strain against his torso. The outline of his muscles beneath the thin fabric had all sorts of dirty thoughts running through my head, and from the smile on his face, he knew exactly what I was thinking.

I looked away, blushing. I’m not typically like this. I don’t usually lust openly after hot guys, but there was just something different about Jericho.

It’s because you’re soul bonded, stupid, the little voice in my head told me, and I rolled my eyes. My own personal voice of reason was annoyingly condescending sometimes.

I took another bite of cereal, chewing determinedly to distract myself. In all honesty, no matter how much I wanted to jump Jericho’s bones right at that moment, I knew that there were a number of more pressing issues that we had to deal with first.

I remembered what he’d said to me, that night he’d stayed in my room, before I’d known that he was Argos and that his life had forever been changed by a Lakota woman named No Rain. That night, we’d both been consumed by passion, desperate to be as close to each other as physically possible. Before we’d managed to go too far, however, Jericho had stopped, and said to me-

“I think you need to get to know me better before you decide to give me something so precious.”

It was probably the most romantic thing I’d ever heard of, and to be honest, I’d never heard of any incident where the man told the woman they should wait before having sex. In my very limited experience with the boys back in New York, they were eager for as much as I was willing to give, and many times I’d been forced to slap away their wandering hands and remind them that this was a date, not a booty call.

Jericho, with his barely controlled passion and his unbelievably impeccable manners, seemed like something straight out of a fantasy. Or maybe out of a cheesy romance novel.

My love life, however, was not what I needed to be focusing on right at that moment.

“Who is Tain?” I asked Jericho, and I saw his expression darken at the mention of the other vampire’s name.
